Combination of Capacitor—

Capacitor are combined in two manner

  1. Series Combination
  2. Parallel combination

Series Combination of Capacitor—

When capacitors are arranged such that negative plate of one capacitor is connected to the positive plate of second one and the negative plate of second capacitor is connected to positive plate of third capacitor and so on, the arrangement is called series combination.

Let us have three capacitors of capacitance C1, C2 And C3 which are connected in series with a voltage Source ‘V’ which set up a charge +Q and –Q Between the two plates of each capacitor.

 If voltage across each capacitor is V1, V2 and V3 respectively then

 

Parallel Combination of Capacitor—

When capacitors are arranged such that positive plates of all the capacitors are connected to one common point and the negative plates of all the capacitors are connected to another common point, the arrangement is called parallel combination.

Let us have three capacitors of capacitance C1, C2 And C3 which are connected in parallel with a Voltage Source ‘V’ which set up a charge Q1, Q2  and Q3  between the two plates of the capacitors respectively Since, the capacitors are in parallel they have same potential difference between their plates then,
